Thoughts on our new CDN - Updated
Update: We’ve seen a sustained traffic spike this week, but… BUT! not from Google, just people clicking through more pages…. because it is so much less painful.
——-
Over the last week we haven’t seen any increase in ‘pageviews’ however we’ve seen a slight increase in adsense CTRs. The additional cost of running the CDN and the increase in rev look like they’ll cancel each other out… for now.
I suspect the increase in CTRs is psychological. The site comes up within an acceptable amount of time to avoid crossing over into the “WTF?” zone of a surfer’s subconcious. We avoid aggrevation enough that CTRs are more likely.
That said, I’m betting that since the site is that much faster Google will increase the position of our site pages in its SERPs within a month and we’ll see a real return on CDN investment at that point.
I wish I had the time to write down every little tick, bob, burp & fart I see over the coarse of a day, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen our traffic from Google decrease for a few days after having a server outage. This isn’t proof that the opposite should be true, but it would be consistent in Google’s thinking of presenting “quality” results to its users. Speed & reliability of a site should be high within one’s definition of quality.
Watching….
